3 Lovely Walks

The last day of 2007 and time to catch up with our news. As ever we've been busy and as ever everyone who is involved with Greyhound Walks in any way has been wonderful. We've had 3 walks this month, our usual Braintree walk, a Greyhound PLUS walk in Hylands Park and a Boxing Day stroll again in Braintree. Across the 3 walks we had a total of 131 dogs walking and collected an amazing £159.73!

It was a cold and very misty morning at Hylands Park, but still 50 dogs and their owners came out to walk.

Hope to see you in 2008 and a very Happy New Year to Everyone

Quiz Night Donations

We raised a staggering £907.65 on the night and the generosity of greyhound and lurcher owners never ceases to amaze me. Donations have now been made to the kennels and the amount sent was based on how many dogs were there on the night representing each kennels and the support that each kennel offers to Greyhound Walks.

We donated as follows ... Castledon Greyhound Rescue £125, Clarks Farm Greyhound Rescue £325, Greyhoundhomer RGT £75, Mildenhall RGT £75, RGOA £100.

The balance between what was raised and what was donated will be added to our general fund to go towards monthly sponsorships.

WOW! The walk in Southend was phenomenal! Not only did the rain clouds stay away but the sun shone and 76 greyhounds and lurchers came out to play!

Lots of local people came along to join us and more than a few heads turned as all the dogs promenaded along the prom. A huge thank you to Rob & Ann, and Diane & Neal for hosting the walk, promoting the walk and showing us how great the seafront is. On behalf of Clarks Farm they collected £88.78 as they walked along and Greyhound Walks also collected £46.77 and sold £15.00 worth of tassels

There were lots of pictures taken which really captured what a great event this was!

14 November 2007

November has set off to a roaring start! The weekend of the 10th / 11th is going to be quite a memorable one. Not only did we have our first social event but we also broke our record for the number of dogs at a walk! Remarkable!

Saturday 10th November saw volunteers of the Greyhound Walks scurrying around and about getting the preparations right for our first social event, The Greyhound Walks Quiz Night being held at Rayne Village Hall. Although it was a sell out there was still an air of trepidation as the clock hands neared 7pm and the first contestants and their greyhounds arrived.

Greyhound Walks Quiz Night 10 November 2007
There was no need to worry, everyone had a great time, including the greyhounds who had their special 'Doggy Bag' supper. There were of course winners and losers.

Although this was to be just a social event we were staggered to realise that we raised an eye popping £907.65! We'll soon be distributing this to all our local rehoming kennels.

Thank you to everyone for their generosity and for supporting the night ... we will definately be doing it again, watch the calendar!

The bold, the brave and the beautiful were out in force on the 11th for our regular Braintree walk. We had a record breaking 67 dogs along to shake off the previous nights cobwebs and enjoy a dry, but quite blustery walk.

It was really nice to see some of the newly homed dogs we hear about on the Forums in the flesh, we hope you enjoyed it and will be back again! Also good to see some return visitors as well as our loyal band of diehards.

Two more very sucessful walks this month, our regular walk at Braintree on 14th saw a record number of dogs along, 56! Where have all these greyhounds been hiding? It's a real treat to welcome not only our regular walkers but also new owners along. £38.70 was donated in the bucket.

Our walk at Dovercourt on 28th was wonderful. Considering this was an 'away' walk the total of 41 assorted greyhounds, lurchers and whippets was astounding. Despite a very blustery, but thankfully dry morning, people came from as far afield as Chadwell Heath, Glemsford and Woodbridge, add to that a large number of Dovercourt residents and some delicious cake at the end, this walk was a huge success, thank you to Anja & Paul Kerrison for being hosts.

A very, very big thank you to Mary, Jenny and Kelly for bringing this lovely walk together. 40 dogs assembled with friends old and new and from the comments from the participants we need more walks in the south!

We were very lucky to have representatives and their dogs from Castledon, Clarks Farm and RGOA. Thank you all for coming along and supporting the walks.

Our walk in High Woods Colchester on 30 September was superb! The weather was just so good, we had a husge turnout of 34 greyhounds plus 1 italian greyhound with once again lots of new families joining us plus of course our usual band of dedicated followers. Joe and Ann were great hosts and a big thank you to the Visitor Centre for serving very tasty coffee. We collected £36.83 in the bucket, as ever everyone was very generous.

Our September Newsletter is now out and apart from all the bits of news it also includes an order form for the Quiz Night tickets, sponsorship of the 2nd Anniversary Show and an order form for our new Greyhound Walks polo shirts.

16 September 2007

Our Braintree walk on September 9th was great! Not only did we welcome new dogs along from Clarks Farm and Ockenden kennels, but we also had our usual dedicated owners making a total of 42 dogs out walking in the late summer sun.

Millie our sponsor dog

In addition to homed greyhounds we were also lucky enough to have Millie and Mikey come along from Clarks Farm. These are two dogs who for various reasons are long term residents at Clarks Farm and in the case of Millie, she is happier in kennels with a life she knows than going through the stresses of trying to find a family home. For that reason Greyhound Walks send a monthly sponsorship donation to help towards her upkeep.

It's been a hectic few weeks, we had a hugely successful walk at Hatfield Forest on 26th where we welcomed lots of new greyhound families to the delights of greyhound walking.

Here's a lovely album of photo's that Kelly and Aran took, and there's another album here taken by Marc, thank you all very much.

On the same weekend we were also at the Countess of Warwick Show at Little Easton where lots of us gathered to show the public what great pets greyhounds make. As usual the 'test drives' were a huge hit! Lets hope that public perception of greyhounds has been upped and a few more people think of giving a home to a greyhound?

12 August 2007 ~ Braintree Walk

Another lovely walk at Braintree for those who braved the roadworks which still aren't finished! It must be about 6 months they've been 'improving' the road!

Braintree Greyhound Walk 12.8.07

We had 35 dogs plus of course their chatty owners and for a change walked in the opposite direction to normal, which confused everyone! After the walk we were joined by Joe from Altogether Animals who was on a fact finding mission. I think she probably filled at least a couple of notebooks!

We had our usual after walk natter, drinks and blackberry cake and collected £34.52 in the bucket, which will be distributed to needy Essex greyhounds at the end of the month

8 August 2007 ~ Greyhound Boy Needing a Home

Gary Honeywood who ran Dunrunnin is looking for a home for one of his old dogs that has been returned. No picture I'm afraid but Prince (racing name Opus Prince) has been returned through no fault of his own.

He is 6yrs old, black with a white front, long white socks and a white tip to his tail. Not sure about his height but he apparently has a really lovely, kind, gentlemanly nature and was one of Kathy's (Gary's wife) favourites. He is currently in a foster home but needs and deserves a home of his own again, preferably in an area where there aren't cats sitting on every corner!

If you can offer Prince a home or want more details please email your details and they'll be passed to Gary.

4 August 2007 ~ Nowton Park Evening Walk

Nowton Park Walk - This was our first evening walk and what a huge success! It was a beautiful evening, the park was stunning and we welcomed lots of new people to the walk with their beautiful dogs.

Dave & Maggie Sansum were the perfect hosts, welcoming newcomers, chatting to the press and leading a lovely walk. We enjoyed Malteeser cake at the end while the dogs cooled off and then headed to the Rushbrooke Arms for yet more chat and refreshing drinks in the lovely garden.

A total of £40.31 was collected, at least 50% will go to Mildenhall RGT as chosen by Dave & Maggie.

Hainault Forest was lovely! - we were lucky again with the weather after all the rain and floods this week. It was bright sun and it wasn't too muddy underfoot. We had nearly 20 dogs at the walk, including 2 from RGOA, lovely to see them on the walk. Also new walkers with their delicious greyhounds. A very very big thank you has to go to Mary for hosting this walk and also Rachel and Meg for lending a much needed hand.

Before this walk we'd contacted the local paper and details of our 'test drives'were published and we had four couples come along to try out a greyhound. I think they were all impressed, who wouldn't be, and maybe there will be a few more homings?

Great Notley Fete - We had a very enjoyable day on the Village Green where we were promoting greyhounds as pets, and I think we can safely say we achieved our goal. The stall had lots of visitors, Clarks Farm had lots of enquiries and our dogs went for lots of 'Test Drives' round the field.

24 June 2007 ~ Admirals Park Walk

Despite it being another drizzly day it took more than that to dampen the sprits of the 23 dogs and their owners who had a brilliant walk round Admirals Park in Chelmsford. We were taken on a lovely tour of the gardens, the riverbank and golf green by Wanda and her owners. We had new walkers along, hello Woody ands Maya, and returning walkers. Lots of new friendships forged again between dogs and owners!

We didn't get as wet as we did in Nowton Park thank goodness and all agreed it was yet another park that deserved a return visit.

16 May 2007 ~ Braintree Walk

Braintree Walk
The walk in Braintree on the 13th had 25 brave dogs out dodging the rain, but as usual a grand time was had by all. Thank you to Eddie for leading the walk while I finished sunning myself on a Greek beach - life's hard!
